Meeting in Bali (Indonesia) from 22 to 29 November, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage has just inscribed 11 new elements on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and 19 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It also selected 5 new proposals to the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices.

The Committee established the Consultative Body for the examination of nominations in 2012 for inscription on the Urgent Safeguarding List, proposals to the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices and requests for international assistance greater than US$25,000, as well as Subsidiary Body for evaluation of nominations for inscription on the Representative List in 2012. Feel free to use our Press resources.

Just what is intangible cultural heritage and why does UNESCO promote its safeguarding? What is the Committee? You can find short answers in a 5 minutes video. You can also encounter more than 200 practices and expressions of intangible heritage already inscribed on the Lists to learn more about the richness of this heritage and the importance it plays in our lives.

The Committee meets annually to evaluate nominations proposed by States Parties to the 2003 Convention and decide whether or not to inscribe those cultural practices and expressions of intangible heritage on the Convention’s Lists.

The List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding (see criteria) is composed of intangible heritage elements that concerned communities and States Parties consider require urgent measures to keep them alive. Inscriptions on this List help to mobilize international cooperation and assistance for stakeholders to undertake appropriate safeguarding measures. In 2009, the Committee inscribed 12 and in 2010 – 4 elements. In 2011, it inscribed additionally 11 elements.

The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (see criteria) is made up of those intangible heritage practices and expressions help demonstrate the diversity of this heritage and raise awareness about its importance. The Committee incorporated 90 elements in 2008 (items formerly proclaimed Masterpieces) and inscribed 76 elements in 2009 and 47 elements in 2010. In 2011, 19 new elements have been added to the list.
